Reopening Tuesday, 26th Guidelines!


Hello ATT Deerfield Family,

 We have great news! Gyms have the green light to reopen with restrictions that have been set by the town of Deerfield Beach. We miss you all and look forward to everyone getting back to training. If you do not feel comfortable coming to train yet, no problem. You can continue to join classes online so that you can train in the comfort of your own home. The links to our video calls are listed below.

 We will be reopening on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. We ask for your support and understanding as we implement our Phase 1 Strategy to help keep our ATT Deerfield Beach family safe. The below safety measures will be in effect between Tuesday, May 26 and Tuesday, June 9.

 ● We will be taking everyone's temperature at the door with a non-contact thermometer. If you have a fever or symptoms of illness you will be asked to leave.

 ● We will provide a hand sanitizing station at the front door.

 ● The state has suggested limiting class sizes based on space. We will be following their suggestion.

At this time only current students and staff will be allowed to enter the gym. Parents will be expected to drop kids off and come back after class to pick them up.

 ● Class sizes will be limited to 12 students only for safety. In order to comply with social distancing guidelines you will need to RESERVE your spot in class ahead of time. If you do not reserve your spot ahead of time we cannot promise you will be accommodated.

 ● Our class times will be shorter to allow us time to clean the mats and common areas between each class.

 ● Adults classes for BJJ will be gi only and we ask that you please wear a t-shirt or rash guard under your gi. During these initial two weeks, you will be paired with the same partner in every class. However, if your assigned partner is not in the same class as you, you will be paired with one partner to work with during that class. There will be no contact permitted in Muay Thai, Boxing and Krav Maga classes during this time.

 ● Kids classes will focus on solo drilling and conditioning.

 ● Access to the changing area will be limited to just storing your personal belongings.

 ● You will be assigned to a training area and you will be provided with a spray bottle and paper towel so that you can clean it before you exit the mats.

 ● We have hired a professional sanitizing company who will be regularly disinfecting the gym.

 ● The facility where we are located has had the garage professionally cleaned and repainted.

 -What we ask your help with:

 ● Please stay home if you do not feel well.

 ● If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can wear a mask and any other personal protective equipment that will help keep you safe.

 ● Bring a towel to all classes that you attend.

 ● Arrive for classes already dressed in your uniform.

● The rental closet will be SUSPENDED for the time being. You will need to have your own gear & ensure its cleanliness (if you need care instructions feel free to ask our staff). We will not allow old, cracked, flaking or funky/mildewed gear in class. If you need equipment we are stocked and happy to help.

● In this time hygiene is of the utmost importance. Nails must be kept short, shoes must be worn when off the mat at all times, no shoes will be allowed on the training surfaces, make sure your clothes / gi are washed & make sure your gloves and shin guards are disinfected & set out to dry after every training session.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or “BJJ” is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on taking an opponent to the ground and controlling them or subduing them using a variety of joint locks or choke holds. BJJ prides itself on its ability to allow a smaller, weaker person to neutralize and defend themselves against a larger, stronger person. It’s viewed by many as the most effective martial art in the world for self-defense, but it’s also practiced by many as a sport as well, with tournaments and scoring criteria based on dominant positions or submission holds. The fact that BJJ doesn’t involve striking allows practitioners the ability to spar (or “roll” as it’s known in the BJJ community) without fear of injury. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an extremely beneficial activity and martial art, both physically and mentally, but can also be quite intimidating to newcomers. Separating the advanced and fundamentals classes allows us to give new students more personal attention at the beginning stages of their Jiu Jitsu progression when they need it most. Karate Isn’t Your Child’s Only Option! Learn the Different Types of Martial Arts at ATT Deerfield Beach.

What are the differences between the various types of martial arts? What exactly am I enrolling my child to do?

We’ve been receiving a lot of calls from parents who would like to enroll their children in a martial arts program, but they do not know the differences between the types of martial arts. If you are a parent searching for karate classes in Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton, it is important to know there are many more options! Here at American Top Team, many parents call and enroll their children thinking they will be taking typical karate classes for kids, when their child will be learning a different type of martial arts entirely. In this article, we will try to explain the differences as well as what we teach our children here at the gym. 

Different types of Martial Arts:

Judo

Judo was created in 1882 by the physical education professor Jigoro Kano in Japan. It is a Martial Art created for self-defense, developing the body, soul and mind. Its technique uses basically the strength and weight of the opponent. In a simple way, the creator of Judo discovered that any person can throw another without using a lot of strength.

Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu Jitsu is similar to Judo, except it takes place “on the ground” instead of standing. It is a lot like grappling combined with submission moves. Also like Judo, it was created in Japan. But it was refined in Brazil, where it evolved into the martial art it is today. There is no use of weapons in its practice. This type of fighting style is considered the basis for modern combat sports.

Karate 

It is a Martial Art developed at Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa, in Japan. It alternates punches, kicks, knee, elbow and open hand techniques. 

Wrestling 

It is classified as an American free style fight, which fighters compete without weapons. Wrestling is a type of sport where one competitor tries to defeat the opponent without attacking him with any type of weapon. 

What to Expect with Jiu-Jitsu at American Top Team Rafael Rebello:

 Judo, Wrestling and Karate techniques are used in the Jiu-Jitsu class at American Top Team Deerfield Beach so your child may learn some of them. Master Rafael Rebello started his career in Martial Arts with Judo. Today, he teaches the basic techniques of Judo and Jiu Jitsu, which are essential for showing kids the proper, technical way to “fall.” He also uses karate techniques as an important mental conditioning for the children, helping to control their impulses, while teaching respect and discipline. 

On Wednesday  the classes are “Kimono-free,” so the children can practice wrestling and learn falling techniques, which are important to improve their jiu-jitsu. Our Jiu-Jitsu program offers other martial arts’ techniques to improve our future champions’ learning process. The classes are divided by age and level (belts). At American Top Team Deerfield Beach, we follow the Jiu-Jitsu Federation standards.

Top Benefits of Boxing Classes!

Boxing as a fitness activity enables the average person to hone those same athletic skills, all without having to take a punch. If you’re hoping to get in great shape and improve your health, you just might want to sign up for a membership to your local boxing gym. There are a number of reasons

1. Enhanced Cardiovascular Health

You hear it all the time: You need to do cardio to protect yourself from heart disease, burn calories, and lose or maintain your weight. But “doing cardio” doesn’t have to mean hopping on a treadmill to log your required minutes – how boring is that?

The whole point of cardio is to place a moderate amount of stress on your heart and lungs so that they’re challenged enough to make beneficial physiologic adaptations to support the higher level of physical activity. But how you choose to place stress on your heart and lungs is up to you. As long as you keep your heart rate up during your workout, there’s no reason you can’t punch, kick, and jump your way to a healthy heart at your local boxing gym.

2. Improved Total-Body Strength

All that punching, kicking, and jumping requires a surprising amount of strength. Think about it – most professional heavy bags weigh at least 100 pounds.

During a boxing workout, you may punch or kick a bag hundreds of times, requiring your upper body, lower body, and core to engage as you make contact with the bag. Plus, most boxing gyms incorporate other strength training moves into a boxing workout. For instance, when I took a class at a local 9Round, I did squats, pushups, planks, and weighted medicine ball exercises all within the context of my fast-paced 30-minute circuit workout.

3. Better Hand-Eye Coordination

You may not think about the importance of hand-eye coordination and its affect on total health, but hand-eye coordination plays an important role in a person’s gross and fine motor skills. Individuals with good hand-eye coordination tend to have faster reflexes and reaction times, and tend to have better physical coordination as a whole. This is particularly important during aging, as coordination and balance become compromised, increasing the risk of falls.

Boxing can help hone hand-eye coordination. When you’re tasked with punching a speed bag (a lightweight boxing bag suspended from a disc that turns and bounces quickly with each punch), or you’re paired up to spar with a partner (practice punching your partner’s padded mitts), you must be able to see the target, react to the target, and hit the target, all while the target is moving and changing position. It’s tough, but with practice, your hand-eye coordination improves substantially.

4. Decreased Stress

Almost any form of moderate to intense physical activity can decrease stress. According to the Doctors, exercise increases endorphins, boosts mood, works as a form of meditation, and improves sleep, all of which help reduce stress.

But sometimes you need more than a walk around the block to help you forget your stressors. I know when I’m feeling most stressed, I need to “leave it all on the field,” so to speak, and sweat out my frustrations.

Boxing is a great outlet for stress for two reasons: First, during a boxing workout you typically transition between high intensity bouts of exercise and moderate intensity recovery periods. When you’re pushing yourself through a couple minutes of high-intensity punching or kicking, you don’t have much mental power left to worry about how awful your job is, or how dirty your house is. And even during rest periods, you’ll be focused on sucking wind and mentally preparing for the next round, not stressing over your packed schedule.

Second, there’s an incredibly cathartic release when you get to take some of your stress out on a punching bag. It’s an empowering feeling to punch your stress to smithereens.

5. Improved Body Composition

Boxing is great for improving body composition – and some might say it’s great for weight loss. Personally, I don’t promote “weight loss” because I don’t think it sends the right message about health goals. Ultimately, if you want to lose weight, what you really want to do is improve your body composition – to increase your muscle mass and decrease your fat mass.

Boxing is an incredible mechanism for improved body composition because it perfectly combines muscle-building strength training moves and calorie-torching bouts of cardio. By regularly participating in a boxing program and following a nutritious eating plan, there’s no reason you won’t see changes in your shape and improvements to your fat mass percentage. And if you’re hoping for a pat on the back from your bathroom scale, you’re likely to see changes in your weight as well.
